Detailed Itinerary July 22, 2008 to August 7, 2008
Jul 22 (Tue)

Depart Home - If you've opted for the full cruise/tour package you will depart home. Your flight will arrive in London the next morning where you will be met by a cruise line representative and transferred to your London hotel.

Tour Segment Begins
Jul 23 (Wed)

London, UK - Arrive in London where you'll be met and transferred to your hotel. The day is yours to settle in.

Jul 24 (Thur)

London, UK - This morning features sightseeing in cosmopolitan London! The afternoon and evening is yours to explore this wonderful city on your own.

Jul 25 (Fri)

Harwich, UK - Today you'll be transferred to the port of Harwich for embarkation formalities. The MV Discovery sails at 4pm.

Jul 26 (Sat)

At Sea - The extensive lecture series, planned for this cruise, kicks off.

Jul 27 (Sun)

Bergen, Norway (8:00 am to 5:00 pm) - Founded in 1070 BERGEN briefly became the capital of Norway in the 13th century and was the largest city in the country until 1830. During the 14th century Bergen became one of the Hanseatic League's most important trade centers and remained so up until the 18th century. Today it is home to 230,000 people and capital of 'Fjord Norway'. The city enjoys a delightful setting among seven hills. Explore the cobbled streets of the old Bryggen quarter, enjoy shopping in the colorful harbourside market or visit one of the city's many museums.

Jul 28 (Mon)

At Sea - The lecture series continues.

Jul 29 (Tue)

Tromso, Norway (2:00 pm to 7:00 pm) - Located on the forest-covered island of Troms, TROMSO is considered the most important port in Norway's Arctic region. Despite being far north of the Arctic Circle, Tromso has a surprising amount of vegetation due to the North Atlantic Gulf Stream, which provides the area with a warmer climate than one would expect. Possible excursions include a 'city highlights' tour with a cable car ride to the top of Mount Storsteinen, from where you will enjoy a spectacular view of the island and surrounding area. Roald Amundsen used Tromso as the starting point for his famous expeditions to the far north and the city became known as the 'Gateway to the Arctic'.

Jul 30 (Wed)

Hammerfest, Norway (7:00 am to 12:00 noon) - The northernmost town in the world, the town of trade in Finnmark and the gate towards the Barents Sea. The town is a big surprise for travellers.

Jul 30 (Wed)

Honningsvag, Norway (5:00 pm to 11:00 pm) - The picturesque fishing village of HONNINGSVAG is Norway's and Europe's northern-most settlement and it is from here that you will have the opportunity to visit the North Cape. The North Cape is situated on the island of Megerøy and despite its lunar-like landscape, there are 200 different types of plants that grow here, some extremely rare. Sheer cliffs rise 1,000 feet above the Arctic Ocean, the scene made even more spectacular by the midnight sun which covers them with an eerie light.

Jul 31 (Thur)

At Sea - Eclipse Rehersal and lectures.

Aug 1 (Fri)

Eclipse Day - The eclipse viewing location is on the centerline of totality in the Arctic Ocean near 79°N and 45°E. The elevation of the sun above the horizon at totality will be 29 degrees and azimuth of the sun at totality will be 192 degrees. The duration of the total phase will be approximately 2 minutes 17.1 seconds. Mid eclipse is about 11:51 Local time - 09:51 UT.

Aug 2 (Sat)

At Sea - Eclipse review and lectures.

Aug 3 (Sun)

Alta, Norway (7:00 am to 1:00 pm) - Alta, known as ‘the Town of the Northern Lights’, is the largest town in Finnmark, in the western part of Norway's northernmost county. Enjoy a visit to Alta Museum, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, located near Northern Europe's largest and richest rock carving range. Mt. Sukkertoppen is home to the Northern Lights Observatory called Haldde, built in 1899 – the world's oldest permanent northern lights observatory. Shore calls are made by ships tender at this port.

Aug 4 (Mon)

At Sea - The lecture series continues.

Aug 5 (Tue)

Alesund, Norway (7:00 am to 2:30 pm) - The coastal town of ALESUND is built on three islands and is noticeably different from any other in Norway. Set amidst several harbours, the town reveals an eclectic mix of architectural styles, with Neo-Classical and mock-Gothic facades, dragons, scenes from Nordic mythology and lavishly decorated turrets all in evidence. These eccentricities sprang from a terrible fire in 1904 which virtually destroyed the whole town. Take time to soak up the atmosphere of this charming port, visit the open-air museum, the Art Nouveau Centre, or travel back in time at the Medieval Age Museum. Try an optional excursion to the beautiful island of God where the fishing village of Alnes and its lighthouse are typical of the Sun region.

Aug 6 (Wed)

At Sea - The lecture series concludes.

Aug 7 (Thur)

Harwich, UK - The ship arrives in port at 9 am. Disembarkation follows shortly thereafter. Those opting for the full cruise tour package will be transferred to the airport for your return flight home.
